Casey’s Story
Chico native Casey Smyth, a devoted father, husband, realtor, multi-sport athlete, and Chico State alumni, recently survived a life-threatening infection that led to 11 surgeries and the
amputation of all four limbs. Through it all, Casey’s strength and spirit remain unshaken. He now faces a long road of recovery, with extensive rehab, adaptive equipment and ongoing medical needs.
UPDATE 2/17/2026:
Throughout 2025, Casey underwent a total of 12 surgeries, including an additional procedure in December. Casey is currently not using his leg prosthetics, as both legs require revision surgeries. Following those revisions, there is a possibility that his existing leg prosthetics may no longer be compatible, which may mean a new set of prosthetics will need to be fitted this year.
In addition to the leg prosthetic updates, Casey will also be receiving several custom arm assistive devices designed to help with everyday tasks. While arm prosthetics are a valuable tool, they can be cumbersome and are not always practical for every situation — these new devices aim to fill those gaps and make daily living a little easier.
